Many countries are banning animal testing. South Korea is also one of the countries that have banned animal testing, but there are still exceptions in the law.
In 2021, 4.88 million animals were used in animal testing, which is the all-time highest rate of animal testing in Korea. (edaily, 2022) Especially, over half of those animals were used in the most painful experiment. This is a significantly high rate compared to other countries. (animal-rights, 2022) About half of the experimental animals were used for drug-related experiments. This is because animal testing is essential for the legal requirements that must be passed to produce medicines.
However, using alternative technologies, there is no need to conduct animal experiments. Taking skin experiments during drug production as an example, instead of using experimental animals, and testing on their skin, we can use cultured cells instead. Moreover, the method of making and experimenting with human mini-organs is also being studied.
Based on these subjects, I started to design three different formats, poster, zine and badge.
The main slogan, ‘실명 당한 생명들’ means ‘Lives that got blinded by someone or something’ in Korean. By taking a suffix with the meaning of passive into the phrase, I created a slogan that gives people alertness about animal testing.
To symbolize the logo, I incorporated rabbits, which are commonly associated with animal testing due to their ease of handling and lower maintenance costs compared to other animals. By utilizing simple layouts, impactful typefaces, and a powerful image, my intention was to convey the central message of the poster with utmost strength and directness. The choice of rabbits as a symbolic representation served to reinforce the intended concept effectively.
Poster
Zine
The zine's narrative could commence with the reader's hands liberating the cage. In contrast to the poster, I endeavored to craft intricate graphics for the zine. This included the creation of two distinct rabbit designs that readers could physically remove from the cage, as well as illustrations that vividly conveyed the written content on each page. By incorporating these interactive elements and detailed artwork, the zine aimed to provide a more immersive and engaging experience for the reader.
Badge
Regarding the badge design, I made several modifications while preserving its fundamental layout. Firstly, I altered the typeface in both languages, lending a fresh visual appeal. Additionally, I adjusted the thickness of the illustration to enhance its overall impact. To establish a harmonious connection with the poster design, I introduced vibrant red highlights into the badge's composition.
