This work presents an exploration of the connection between language and physical spaces, specifically focusing on the symbolism of stairs and the experience of movement. The spiral staircase serves as a central element, incorporating line elements into the typography design. The symmetry of the structure, inspired by the staircase, allows for a harmonious composition even when inverted. By intentionally placing the words ‘Rise’ and ‘Fall’ within this framework, the work invites viewers to contemplate the concept of ascending and descending within the context of their own journeys.

In this project, I purposefully chose a unique location called “Non-Places.” These are ordinary spaces that we often pass through without consciously noticing them, lacking distinct features or characters. To explore the connection between language and physical environments, I strategically positioned words within these spaces. This deliberate arrangement creates opportunities for dynamic interaction and tensions to emerge between the words and their surroundings.

The specific space I selected for this project is a spiral staircase located in the corner of a riverside apartment near Vauxhall station. I found it fascinating to utilize the line element of the staircase’s metal structure.

To represent the concept of stairs, I chose the words ‘Rise’ and ‘Fall.’ Inspired by the connection between stairs and movement, I wanted to create a structure that aligns the viewer’s path with the height of the staircase, embodying the experience of ascending and descending. These ideas formed the basis of my typography design.

Upon observing the spiral staircase, I noticed that its central element was a line, which sparked the idea of incorporating line elements into the typography. I considered using wires or strings to achieve this effect. Drawing inspiration from the fundamental characteristics of the spiral staircase, which maintains its symmetry even when inverted, I aimed to create a structure that mirrored this property. In terms of typography, I strived to design a structure that maintained its symmetry, even when flipped upside down. I positioned the word ‘Rise’ on the upper structure and placed the word ‘Fall’ on the bottom structure, inverted.
